I've been touting for a while now that I think the right thing to do it trade Austin and re-sign Robinson. Austin's injury woes opened the door and I really think he'd bring a decent return in trade.
I just found his contract info. He is VERY trade-able. Stephen Jones made a GREAT contract here.
Miles Austin Wide Receiver 9/9/2010: Signed a seven-year, $57.168 million contract. The cap-conscious deal contains $18 million guaranteed -- no signing bonus but all of Austin's whopping $17.078 million first-year base salary. 2011: $8.54 million, 2012: $1.15 million, 2013: $6.732 million, 2014: $5.5 million, 2015: $6.888 million, 2016: $11.38 million, 2017: Free Agent
By giving him no bonus, just a massive first year base salary he kept the remaining years very reasonable (until the last year, at which time obviously he could be extended or cut). Since he got no bonus, it would do nothing to the cap except reduce it if we traded him.

I like Austin, but this team has major holes to fill. With Dez and Robinson as the starters we just have to go find a 3rd WR, which isn't terribly hard. That frees up cap space and brings back picks to help the process.

By the way, I LOVE the way that contract was structured. I'd like to see them do that with everyone they sign when possible (except contracts like Ware's, when he has $40M guaranteed...can't do that in one year).
Take the big hit in one year and then you have a player for 3-5 years that is cheap (and thus cut-able or trade-able at any point with no cap hit or dead money).
Guys like Romo and Ware would be tough to do this way, but most others it would be possible. 2013 is a good time to start doing this. That is when our cap will be in very good shape.

by the way, stephen jones was on norm earlier today touting that they are in great financial shape and willing to spend big in free agency and even move up in the draft, if needed
not sure if he's serious about making major moves, or if it's just lip service to appease a disgruntled fan base, but i sure hope it's the former

Stephen isn't the spin-master Jerry is. I've heard him talk about cap issues in the past. I just read the transcripts from this interview (paraphrased for the most part, I think( and it seems like Stephen isn't concerned about cap maneuvers. I really hope they continue last year's trend of bold moves. More youth, more speed.

Best place to send Miles? The Jets.
They have WR issues. They are talking about making a run at Peyton but according to KC Joyner will need to upgrade the WR talent if they do that (or even if they just keep Sanchez). It gets him out of the NFC. It send him home to NJ.
From Joyner:
"The only way Manning could significantly help the Jets is if New York could assure Manning a dramatic improvement in receiving personnel. It will be quite difficult to achieve this goal via the draft, since the Jets won't be in a position to be able to acquire former Oklahoma State wideout Justin Blackmon at that spot. Blackmon is, in the eyes of most scouts, the only wide receiver candidate in the draft who looks to have A.J. Green/Julio Jones impact ability from Day 1. That leaves leave free agency as the only option for an upgrade. This year's free agent wide receiver crop looks like it will include Vincent Jackson, DeSean Jackson and Dwayne Bowe among others, but since New York already invested big money into Santonio Holmes' contract last year and would have to find a way to fit Manning's contract under their salary cap, one has to wonder if breaking the bank for a big name wideout would be feasible for the Jets. Without that kind of upgrade, it would difficult for even the most talented quarterback in the league to turn this offense into a powerhouse. And since Manning looks to have lost that title, it makes the proposition of his joining the Jets one that simply doesn't guarantee an upgrade."

Have a conference call with Rob calling Rex and offering Miles for their 2nd rounder (47). I'd try to get Vladimir Ducasse from them too, or they could throw in a 3rd.

Cowboys could make a play for Carl Nicks? He won't be cheap, but he is just 26. He played for Callahan at Nebraska. I thought initially that we didn't have much of a chance. I figured he would stay in New Orleans. However, I have read in a couple of spots now that New Orleans is A) worried about getting Brees' deal done, nobody else right now and B) They just gave Jahari Evans a huge contract, how much money do they want to tie up in guards?

the only wide receiver candidate in the draft who looks to have A.J. Green/Julio Jones impact ability from Day 1 while i agree about miles to the jets making lots of sense for both teams, the above quote is not entirely accurate, as michael floyd is a TOTAL BAD-ASS
