The Rangers have only 5 days left to negotiate a contract with Yu Darvish. I'm still hoping we just did an international cock block. Of course if the contract come in at 5 year $49 millions I'll be able to tolerate the risk but anything more then that an I'll give it a thumbs down.
Of course if the deadline passes and Darvish isn't signed I expect to see extensions for Kinsler, Holland, Napoli, possibly Hamilton and still be able to afford another piece. After that I expect Fielder may not walk away from a 4 year $100 million payday. if he does oh well fuck him we'll keep improving.
The Rangers have invited Olt, Ross, and Perez to major league camp they've even started the planning to work Olt as a first basemen. Perez has electrifying stuff with Oliver signing with Toronto he could be our lefty in the pen. Ross was our minor league pitcher of the year another lefty with great stuff. Both kids lack experience but more then make up for that with dominate fastballs that complement off speed nastiness.

BTW if this thing is going to happen will happen this weekend. The Rangers Winter Carnival awards night is Friday seems logical to happen then.

If we don't sign Darvish, is it safe to assume we would then go after Fielder?

I've read in a few places that it could be done by the Winter Carnival just because of the buzz and shirt/jersey sales it will generate. However, I've also seen that they think it will come down to the last day or two.
Newberg said if we don't sign Darvish that we'll probably take a shot at Fielder. Nats are probably the favorites on him right now but the fact that he is waiting as long as he has to sign I think is a good thing. Maybe he is keeping an eye on us, to see what we do.

Darvish deal at this point of the season doesn't make since. Season ticket sales already increased 4% over 2011. So let's say Darvish increase sales another 5%. So that's 5% X 50,000 seats for 81 home games at about $50 a seat. That's $10.125 million in revenue. That's if you think him being signed creates a 5% bump in sales. I don't think the influx of Japanese fan and merchandising will come close to Darvish's possible $22 million dollar price tag.
BTW at this point in October the Rangers gross revenue showed an increase of 17% over 2010. But they've also increased team salaries over 40%. The 17% didn't take into account the salary bumps two different articles used. I don't think it's time to be buying unless it's a low risk speculation.
I do think Fielder adds 10% in season ticket sales. Not as much in the way of T-shirt or advertisement. So either avenue we are looking at spending more then bringing in.
All signs are pointing once again the the Rangers being in a financial crunch until the big TV contract comes into play in 2 years.
I don't want the Rangers to follow the stupid spending patterns of Jerry Jones with his precious little Spruce Goose/Jerryworld. I want them to have flexibility and build like a champion. Unless we aren't having the exact same conversation about the Cowboys cap woes wondering how they can plug holes due to miss spending and inflated contracts.

I let the professionals handle the salaries. In a football world these conversations make sense. There is a salary cap. In MLB there is no cap. Spend what you want. In the NBA there is a soft cap. For years Cuban spent WELL ABOVE that cap and paid the luxury tax to put winners on the floor. He has been greatly rewarded as his cheap little franchise has tripled in worth. Yes, he loses money yearly but he gets it back in equity of the franchise and the increased sales of tickets/merchandise has offset much of the loss.
The Rangers might operate in the red for 2 years until the big TV deal kicks in. I'm ok with that if they are. If they sign guys, then they are apparently ok with it. If they don't sign Darvish or Fielder, then they are taking your approach.
We shall see....

I wish I could fast forward the clock Fielder = World Series WIN.
Went through world series winners for the last 20 years almost always featured a top 5 1st basemen.
2011 St. Louis Cardinals 2010 San Francisco 2009 New York Yankees 2008 Philadelphia Phillies 2007 Boston Red Sox 2006 St. Louis Cardinals 2005 Chicago White Sox 2004 Boston Red Sox 2003 Florida Marlins 2002 Anaheim Angels 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks 2000 New York Yankees 1999 New York Yankees 1998 New York Yankees 1997 Florida Marlins 1996 New York Yankees 1995 Atlanta Braves 1993 Toronto Blue Jays 1992 Toronto Blue Jays 1991 Minnesota Twins
There a couple years that weak 2010 Giants. You'd think 2003 Florida Marlins but they had Derek Lee. Then if you think about 92-93 Toronto Blue Jays with Olerude.

If I had to choose between Fielder and Darvish, I'd take Fielder. He is a KNOWN quantity in the major leagues. However, pitching is king and if our scouts and all these other guys are right then we'll really have something in Darvish.
Honestly, I hope the shock the piss out of us and get them both. EFF the salaries. We have multiple billionaires writing checks and a Jewish guy watching the budget, they should be fine.

I always love value. That's never a big splash signing. But I sometime wish I had the Yankee mentality spend to win. The only Jew I know is Skinnerstein he seems like a moron spending his money.

Fielder is meeting in Dallas today. Looks like the price is 6 years $22-24 million with a opt out after 3. It's coming down to weather he's a better long term fit then Hamilton.
I'm thinking if this happens Hamilton is traded for a true center fielder and a nice prospect package.
There are so many teams you could couple with to trade Hamilton very exciting. First team I'd check in with is Baltimore Adam Jones has won a gold glove as a center fielder only 27 and they love former Rangers.
If we kept Hamilton and signed Fielder WOW
Lineup of Kinsler, Elvis, Hamilton, Fielder, Beltra, Napoli, Young, Cruz, Murphy/Gentry. There was a famous novel Murders Row about the Yankees this would be a true Murders Row.
