Never read any of these books, but I did see the LOTR movies. This was visually AMAZING. I saw it in IMAX 3D...WOW.
They story was good...some very far fetched "how did they get out of that" stuff but it was a fun movie to watch.

I enjoyed the LOTR movies somewhat, but am having a hard time getting enthused enough to mix this in for some reason.

Well if you can catch the IMAX 3D version, I guarantee you won't be mad at the money spent...visually it was AWESOME
