Avezzano suffered a heart attack in Milan, Italy, according to the Cowboys. He was named head coach of the Seamen Milano in September 2011.
Avezzano started as a football player, but made his mark in coaching at Oregon State in 1980.
He was the special teams coach under Jimmy Johnson in the 1990s, but left when Bill Parcells came on board in 2003. He went to the Oakland Raiders as special teams coach there.
Avezzano also led the Dallas Desperados Arena Football League team as head coach.
After his career in Oakland, he returned to North Texas and opened Coach Joe's Bar and Grill in Frisco in 2007, and Hat Tricks in Lewisville.
Avezzano also was a sought-after motivational speaker.
