Saw this in the Newberg report today and just sat here amazed. I'm SO glad we didn't get in on this....
· The Angels are reportedly paying Pujols the following over their ten-year commitment, in millions of dollars: 12, 16, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30. That’s a lot better for Texas than if the deal were front-loaded or constant-level. Pujols also gets a $3 million bonus when he reaches 3,000 hits and $7 million for hitting his 763rd home run, and a $10 million personal services contract at the end of his career. · Jeff Passan (Yahoo! Sports) with some cautionary words as far as the Pujols signing is concerned: before Alex Rodriguez turned 32, he averaged 154 games played per season and hit .306/.389/.578. Since turning 32: 124 games per year and .284/.375/.521. Says Passan: “Alex Rodriguez’s 10-year deal is a disaster, yes, but at least the Yankees structured it to taper down toward its end. Along with incentives, Pujols could reap an average of $30 million a year for half a decade when most players are retired. All of which is to say: better win now.”

They'll be hard to beat for the next 5 years after that not so much. I love the addition of the extra wild card position we can slide in the Backdoor and EFFFING everyone up.

They will definitely be hard to beat as long as they have Haren and Weaver in their prime at the top of the rotation. And as much as douchey CJ whips me, he's probably better than most #3 starters out there.

I just can't believe that contract...insane. I MIGHT consider giving that kind of deal to a 24 yr old SUPERSTAR with skins on the wall already, but for a guy heading into retirement? 10 years of escalating salary? Plus all the extras? ouch.

Plus all the extras? ouch. yeah, the craziest thing about this deal to me is that pujols maybe MAYBE has 2-3 years of his prime left (probably more like 1-2)

He'll be good for more like 5 years. But that being said if they are World Series ready now there no chance of getting any better IE a proven closer.
