Matt,
Need to buy a laptop for my niece as a college gift, something around $550.00 any thoughts?

For the most part, only Acer, maybe a Compaq or two and maybe some brands that are not exactly known will be around $550. I think Dell sells one in the Best Buy store taht is on sale for $600.

Or Fry's. They sell stuff so cheap it makes me think they ripped off a truck full of merchandise.

Not on laptops. They are not a high profit margin unit. We get like 10 dollars off on all of them. When we bought our desktop, we didn't use my discount. By the time the discount gets figured in plus tax, I would have spent more as an employee.
