Can you imagine Wade ever doing something like this? sportsblogs.star-telegram.com/cowboys/2011/08/cowboys-making-rookies-earn-the-star-garrett-says.htmlCowboys making rookies earn the star, Garrett says
The Cowboys rookies aren’t wearing a star on their helmets in training camp.
They don’t get them just because they’ve joined the team, head coach Jason Garrett said.
“Just because you’ve signed with the Dallas Cowboys doesn’t mean you’ve earned that thing yet,” he said. “The veteran players have them on. The young players do not have them on, and hopefully at some point, will do the things necessary to earn that star on the side of their helmet.”
That means every rookie – even fourth-string quarterback Zack Eskridge, who’s grandfather, Jack Eskridge, was the Cowboys’ first equipment manager and actually designed the star as it looks today. He added the white border on the inside edges.
Isn’t that ironic, Garrett was asked.
“It is ironic,” he answered, with just a touch of a smile.
But Garrett, a former Cowboys third-string quarterback, was serious about the star’s meaning to him and the franchise.
“The star is very important to us,” he said. “The star is an international symbol. It’s the Dallas Football Cowboys. The star means something. This team has been around for 51 years. There’s a great tradition here. You have to earn the right to wear that star, and we’re very clear with the players about that.”

I really like how he's trying to instill in the players the sense of tradition they should understand the importance of upholding... sportsblogs.star-telegram.com/cowboys/2011/08/cowboys-welcome-back-some-50-ex-players-.htmlSince Jason Garrett took over the Cowboys, they have gone back to the future. Garrett has shared the team's history with his players, including new photographs of the team's Super Bowl-championships outside the Cowboys' Valley Ranch locker room.
The Cowboys had ex-players Michael Myers, Leon Lett, Larry Allen and Kevin Mathis roaming the practice fields at Valley Ranch on Thursday. (Lett and Mathis have been helping coach during training camp.) During Friday's practice against the Chargers at Cowboys Stadium, the Cowboys will welcome back 50 former players. The ex-players will have lunch at the stadium and be on the sideline to visit with the current players.
"I think it’s an important thing to understand where this organization has been and embrace it. Embrace it," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. "It’s a standard that has been set here for a long time. The players hear me say this all the time: We’re not living in the past; we’re living in today and going forward. But sometimes it can be instructive to see what’s gone on in the past, particularly when you’re in an organization like this. To have the relationships that I have and this organization has with some of these players, we think that’s a good thing. It’s been a real positive experience really for everybody."

sportsblogs.star-telegram.com/cowboys/2011/08/jason-garrett-not-happy-performance-says-cowboys-were-exposed-and-have-a-lot-things-that-need-to-be-.htmlThe mantra of it's okay, we'll get them next time, left the Cowboys when Wade Phillips fired last season.
Jason Garrett is holding the Cowboys accountable for how they perform in the practice and it games.
To that end, he was not happy with last night's performance against the Chargers and let the players know it in no uncertain terms after the game. It wasn't so much the 20-7 setback as it was the three turnovers, mental breakdowns and gaffes on defense.
Never mind that it was just the second preseason game. Garrett said things must be cleaned up now, especially the turnovers.
"What I told the team after was, without having seen the stats, I bet we had more yards," Garret said. "I bet we ran for more yards. I bet we threw for more yards. I bet we were better on third down. But ultimately it comes down to we turned it over three times and they didn't turn it over at all. We need to do a better job taking care of the football. We need to do a better job getting it away from them. That is statistic No. 1 in the NFL and we lost tonight. I think that was a big reason why."
Garrett was not done either.
He said "we live in reality. There was some things that happened that exposed us. There were a number of mental mistakes. We need to play better. There are some things that happened tonight that are mistakes that we shouldn't have made. There were some good things that happened but there were a lot of things that need to be addressed."
