Dez Out for Season

INDIANAPOLIS – Dez Bryant's rookie season with the Cowboys ended Sunday much as it started: with an ankle injury.

Bryant fractured the right ankle while returning a kickoff during the fourth quarter of the win against Indianapolis. On the fateful return, Bryant was trapped behind blocker Victor Butler and pulled down from behind by Kavell Conner.

Bryant was unable to put weight on the foot as he was helped from the field. He was the first player out of the locker room, using crutches to get to a post-game buffet in a hallway.

"I ain't talking to you guys," Bryant said.

Bryant missed much of training camp because of a high sprain to the left ankle and has had trouble with that joint all season. He rolled the left ankle during Friday's practice, creating doubt about his status for this game.

Owner-general manager Jerry Jones hinted at organizational concern over how Bryant will respond.

"This is hard to handle as much as he wants to be with the team, out on the practice field, being a part of these games," Jones said. "He's going to have to bite that, be mature, be more grown up about the situation he's in."

This is the second consecutive year in which Bryant's season has played prematurely. He missed the final nine games at Oklahoma State last season because of an NCAA violation.

Bryant had one catch in this game and seven in his last four games. He finished with 45 catches for 561 yards and six touchdowns. He also returned two punts for scores.

"He certainly made great strides in his rookie year," interim head coach Jason Garrett said. "Hopefully, he'll continue to learn when he's out."

Kevin Ogletree replaced Bryant at wideout, but did not have a pass thrown to him.

This is a real bummer...I think he was well on his way to Rookie of the Year...

I think Bradford might have gotten the nod over Bryant, but it would have been close. This sucks as much as anything has sucked before. Dude is electric with the ball.

Irvin missed part of his rookie year too when he blew out his knee. Here is hoping the rest of Dez's career is like Mike (only maybe a little longer and with less coke/hookers).

Mike Sherrard blew out a knee also in his first 2 years...let's hope he is more Irvin than Sherrard...

dez has already done more in a handful of games that SPARErard did his entire career

Sherrard didn't blow out a knee, he broke TWO bones in his leg (tibia and fibula) and then rebroke them the following year while running on the beach before he was given clearance by team doctors to start running again.

Lets also not forget, back then an ACL tear probably ended your career, by the late 80s or early 90s, it was a full year to get back on the field and almost another full year before you were "fully back". Now, guys blow out a knee completely (ACL and MCL) at the end of the year and they are back for training camp (Wes Welker).

This injury will be a complete non-factor in Dez's career.

I meant more the leg injuries forcing them to lose time than anything...Dez breaking his ankle and Irvin breaking his knee aren't exactly the same.

My point was(is), Dez is a beast. This ankle injury will be nothing but a blip on the radar in the long term like missing games as a rookie was for Irvin.

I would rather he was healthy and playing but I don't think it will have any affect on his career
He will still be a beast next year when he comes back. If anything it gives him even more motivation to work hard this offseason.

I expect him to be a top 5 WR next year. Austin will be #2 and (drum roll) RoyW will a re-worked contract will be #3.
