Lee went back to the Phillies...Rangers pitching is screwed. mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20101213&content_id=16311236&vkey=news_tex&c_id=tex&partnerId=rss_texARLINGTON -- The Rangers' pursuit of pitcher Cliff Lee took an unexpected twist on Monday when they were told that he is signing with the Phillies.
Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said the club was informed of the decision Monday night.
"Cliff called me," Daniels said. "He was very classy. He was very appreciative of the time he was here and how he was treated. He and his family enjoyed his time here. He also enjoyed his time in Philadelphia and liked some of the things that opportunity had to offer."
The Rangers and the Yankees have been considered the front-runners to sign Lee, but the Phillies have pushed hard since the Winter Meetings and won the pursuit.
Lee pitched for the Phillies for the final two months of the 2009 season and, as he did with the Rangers this past season, helped them reach the World Series.
The Phillies traded him to the Mariners last winter. The Rangers acquired him from the Mariners on July 9 and have been trying hard to re-sign him. But the Phillies' emergence has left the Rangers on the outside.
The Yankees had made a seven-year offer to Lee and the Rangers made a series of offers to Lee last Thursday in Arkansas. Neither was good enough. I wouldn't say screwed. The same staff put us in the division lead and probably would have won the division without Lee. Now, if we make the playoffs next year, that might be when we feel the sting of him not being here. But, who knows what the remainder of the off-season brings. Now they can go full steam ahead at Beltre and maybe Grienke or maybe Garza. Both pitchers are going to cost a lot, as of the farm, but as long as they maintain Martin Perez and Tanner Scheppers, then that's fine.

everything will be fine IF we go get OL' GREINKE
if not, richie whitt is right when he suggests the rangers change their slogan from "it's time" to "time's up"

Wow. What a fucking knife to the back. The only saving grace is that he's going NL. Who knows looking back on this, we may be glad that the team didn't spend the money. I feel good that the Rangers made a strong push and did all they could do to make it happen.

according to evan grant, the loss of lee means either feliz or ogando definitely becomes a starter, with the other being closer

I was torn about a 6 year deal and really didn't want to go 7. I'd hold off on the Ogando talk (although I really like his arm) until we see what happens with Greinke and Matt Garza, or maybe even Chen Mein Wang...pretty sure I butchered that name.

Gotta say I'm impressed that he chose the go where he wanted to be, even though it was the lowest money and fewest years being offered....at least we didn't get money whipped by NY...and this is much worse for them than it is us. Everyone was so sure they would get him at the deadline and then in free agency...they have major chinks in the armor now and everyone can see them.
Loved Kinsler's text to Lee.....great playing with you, see you in the World Series...LOL
