VERY poor safety play is a big contributor, along with a very inconsistent pass rush and CBs who played dumb football all year. The effort level of everyone involved is better, but Newman has been playing with his head up his butt for the entire year, letting guys just run by him before turning and trying to catch up. Jenkins gambles have ended in multiple pass interference calls as well as that long TD by Jackson vs the eagles. Our CBs have to be smarter. They are more than capable. The safeties are a big issue though...lots of work to do there.
I'm starting to wonder if Campo needs to go as the secondary coach too...Garrett needs to get a new D-Coord and then work with him to build the defensive staff.

Jenkins is a LONG, LONG way from being one of the worst CBs in the NFL. Maybe based on expectations, but there are a lot of very bad CBs out there. Jenkins has bad stretches, but very good stretches too where you rarely hear his name because he has his guy blanketed. Bad CBs are always bad...and there are alot of those out there.

Gary's right about Zimmer's being the worst. But this one is definitely the most underachieving. I think it is the worst AND most underachieving...don't recall any of our CB's in past teams doing everything possible to not have to tackle someone...By the end of the year, this defense will have broken club records for most yards and points given up...BOOK IT! Not sure about the yards but I was right about this defense breaking club records for the worst in franchise history scoring wise...Fitting.

Not to dismiss how terrible this defense was at times this year but let's not forget that teams approach games differently, depending on the opponent. Yesterday's eagles game is a perfect example. They had no fear that we were going to come into Philly and score 30 pts. They were very conservative on offense and it helped us.
You look at the defenses we had during the lean years in the late 90s or early 2000s and understand that the offenses on those teams scared nobody. Teams didn't press against us...they just ran vanilla stuff, scored 20 and took the win.
Against this years team, opponents knew they'd have to score 30 to win. Garrett's offense scored 26 or more points a record number of teams (team record). Offenses came out slinging against us because A) they knew they had to and B) because they could.
If they didn't need to be so aggressive against us, they would not have. They had to....this defense was terrible, but not nearly as bad as we've seen here. I think Ware had as many sacks as some of those terrible teams had all together.

If our defense knew teams would be pass heavy and couldn't take advantage of that, it just proves how awful they really were to me.

That is when our offense took off. Teams were forced to be aggressive to score points. It helped us get more turnovers. Big plays for us. It also creates more big plays for the other team...that is just the law of averages. Again, I'm not defending this defense, it was BAD. However, if some of those other defenses had an offense that could score 30 a game, they would have give up 40 a game...talent wise, they were just far behind this team.

Can't just look at post Wade, have to look at the season as a whole...for 16 games, they were terrible in my eyes. Just because they tried a little harder when Garrett took over doesn't mean they were any better.

Pre-Garrett they were terrible because they were soft...like their coach. Post-Wade they were better, but forced to deal with offenses putting their foot on the gas because our offense was racking up points.
