Some mocks in full-on wishful thinking mode have the Cowboys taking LSU's Patrick Peterson. Nebraska's Prince Amukamara is a popular choice for the Cowboys' ninth pick, and both Mel Kiper and Todd McShay have him going to the Cowboys in their latest mock drafts. More recently, we've seen the occasional mock that even had the Cowboys taking Miami's Brandon Harris.
All of this may not happen if Jerry Jones' remarks yesterday from the Senior Bowl workouts are anything to go by.
We reviewed the corner position extensively in a recent post and the picture that emerged was not a pretty one. Yet amid all the TDs and yards given up by the corners, the consensus was that the safety play and lack of pressure up front probably impacted the Cowboys corner's performance more than any regression by an individual corner.
Jerry Jones appears to have similar thoughts:
"They’re probably, and I go down through all of them, they’re a little better than probably the taste we have in our mouth," Jones said. "I’m not saying we hung them out, but I’ll say that we sure ask a lot of them, relative to maybe what we might do in the future."
"Now I don’t think we were pleased with the year they had compared to other years," Jones said. "But a part of this job is looking at not only to the talent of the player, but how he compares to other players. But in general, I’m not as negative on our cornerbacks as you might think."
Perhaps Jones has faith in Rob Ryan's abilities to bring the corners back to their 2009 Pro Bowl level. Perhaps he sees last year as an aberration that can be fixed with better safety play. Regardless, it looks like cornerback may just have been crossed off the top of the shopping list:
"We accept some of the things that we were doing and asked our corners to do," Jones said. "We probably ... when the dust settles, won’t be as hard on those corners as we might have been, or generally as fans might have been." |

That is just talk about our current CBs. That doesn't mean they would not look at another CB in the draft. It also assume that Jerry is gonna pay the freight on Newman which I'm not so sure about right now unless Newman takes a cut.
Oh...and around draft time just remember, if a GM is talking, he is probably lying.

I've also seen some 2nd and 3rd round CBs that are interesting. If we don't take one at 9, it doesn't mean we won't take one.
I'm really starting to warm to the idea of drafting Tyron Smith. By the middle of next year he will be 305 and by his 2nd year he'll be around 315 and STRONG, just like Ferguson for the Jets. He was only around 290 when drafted.

I see a trade down with one of the OTs (Smith, Sherrod, Carmi) as the target and I think we'll see greatness from them. Bookend OTs with them and Free for the rest of Romo's career, which would bode well for our offense.
I think we'll see safety and DL addressed in the 2nd - 4th rounds. We have success with those picks.
I predict a big bounce back for Jenkins and Scandrick too....I think this change of culture is exactly what this team needs to fulfill it's potential.

yeah, as poorly as they played this year, i'm willing to wait on writing off jenkins and scandrick until i see what they do under rob ryan

Because if that's how he really feels, he is just making it harder and harder to defend him. But, no GM would say who they are targeting this early, so I feel it's just him talking to give the print media some quotes. More pressure up front will definitely help the DBs, but that wasn't the only reason why the secondary couldn't cover anyone. |

I think there are too many contributing factors to pin anything on anyone other than effort. Jenkins had a lapse in effort at the beginning of the season and that isn't good.
However, we know what he is capable of when motivated and he certainly played better once Garrett had them back in pads and hitting all the time.
Now, let's see if Ryan turns him into the next Revis. Ryan's defenses always play hard.
