EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP)—New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora will have season-ending surgery on his injured left knee. Umenyiora was hurt in the second quarter of Saturday’s preseason game against the New York Jets, and Dr. Russell Warren told the team on Sunday that an MRI found a tear in his lateral meniscus. The two-time Pro Bowler will have surgery on Tuesday. “It was obviously the news that I did not want to hear,” coach Tom Coughlin said. “But after listening to the explanation and Dr. Warren’s thoughts on it, I am convinced that this is the right procedure and the right way to go.” The normal recovery last four months, Coughlin said, adding that a non-surgical option was not discussed. The loss is a major one for the Super Bowl champions in the wake of the retirement of seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Strahan a few months ago. Coughlin said the team is considering all its options when asked whether the Super Bowl champions were interested in luring the 36-year-old out of retirement. Coughlin recently talked with Strahan about his new career working on Sundays for Fox Sports. “The only thing I talked with Michael about was his new challenge, moving forward in his new assignment and he was very excited about that,” Coughlin said. This is not the first time Umenyiora has required surgery to repair cartilage damage in his left knee. He underwent arthroscopic surgery for the same problem at Troy State. Umenyiora started all 16 games last season and had 52 tackles and a team-high 13 sacks. He added seven tackles in the Giants’ playoff run to the Super Bowl. The Giants are now a bit thin at defensive end. Justin Tuck has replaced Strahan and New York signed veteran Renaldo Wynn in the offseason. With Umenyiora out, the Giants have to consider moving strongside linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka back to defensive end. He was switched to linebacker last year so the team could put its best 11 players on the field. “I haven’t had a chance to talk to him so I am not going to comment on that,” Coughlin said.

That is going to be a huge lose for the Giants. Their defense is based on pressuring the QB. I do predict Tuck will have a huge year. Wonder if Strahan will come out of retirement for a season if he truly loves the Giants and their fans.

Tuck should be quiet this season. He will be getting double-teamed until someone else shows that they can rush the passer. A lot of his success came from the attention Strahan & Osi had to have paid to them. Tuck is good, just don't know if he can handle it on his own.

They just went from having 3 dominant pass rushers to having one. Tuck will get all the attention now. Also, he was the 3rd best they had so he was getting one on one matchups with lesser linemen. That won't happen now. This is a big blow to NY...too bad. Like I keep saying, I like playing the other teams' best players.

Wow...that is a brutal blow to the Giants. If Strahan does not come back for another season, they will be hard pressed to make the playoffs without a solid pass rush.

Well it was a season ago I thought the same thing about the Giant cause of their often injured Offensive line. They revamped it before the season started and it ended up being one of their strong points down the stretch. I wonder if they have another revamping set to make a 2nd push to the superbowl.

Strahan staying retired.
Foxsports reporting:
"This has been one of the toughest nights of my life," Strahan said from Greece. "But after long deliberation and throwing around a million scenarios in my head for the past day, I think it's just best if I stay retired.
"I have gone back and forth on this because as a player you'll always want to play, you'll never lose that urge to be out there. But I could only do this if I could commit 100 percent, physically, mentally, emotionally and I can't do that. I've tried to convince myself and my body to give it one more year, but in the end I just don't think I could turn it on like I need to again."
Strahan and the team held discussions and he says the money was enough to do the deal. But in the end, it became a matter of whether or not he wanted to put his body through the rigors of another NFL season.

They still have Kiwanuka and Tuck, but all depth is gone and the top 2 pass rushers are gone. They will have to retool the whole thing, but like Dave pointed out, they had to do the same with the OL last year and it turned out to be a strong point on their team.
