We do not have the athletes to compliment Kidd. That is why I was not too excited when I first heard about the trade. The more I thought about it, I tricked myself into thinking it was good. Harris may not have been the answer, but at least he was fast and would drive to the hoop. Sure he didn't pass well and pass in prime locations, but he did generate offense. Not looking forward to this season.
We had some athletes, but Avery refused to play them.
If he had run out a lineup like Dave pointed out, or something like Kidd, Terry, Wright, Bass, and Dirk we might have had something.
Instead, Avery insisted on sitting athletes (like Wright) in favor of guys like Stackhouse.
Stack was good in a slowed down offense where he was asked to score off the bench.
That is not where Kidd is at his best, or to be honest Dirk either. Dirk thrives in a more up tempo game. His shots are based on rhythm and you don't get into rhythm getting banged around by triple teams on the block. That is for POWER players.
If Avery had only turned loose the offense and subbed some of the athletes we had, it might have been better, although probably not nearly good enough in the long run.
The reason I was for the trade (and I'm still not sorry it happened) is because I believe we had peaked with Harris running the team. He was a horrible PG who happened to give Tony Parker fits. Beyond that, he was mediocre AT BEST.
After losing in the Finals and then the first round to GS, something drastic needed to be done. At the time, Harris was the tradeable asset. Josh had not shown his insane side just yet, and you don't want to deal your under-30 MVP.
This team needed a shakeup. That was the only hope. It was a crapshoot as to if it would work, but what we knew was NOT going to work was sticking with that same group again.
This team still needs something. I don't know if it is Vince Carter, Michael Redd or Joe Johnson, or even someone like Chauncy Billups (could play the 2 until Kidd retires...basically double PGs) but it needs to be a 2 that can score (all the time, not just occasionally and only in the first quarter of meaningless games).
Guys like Terry and Bass should be our staples off the bench, but if you have to move them (and Howard, and nearly anyone else) to get better, please do.
I want Dirk to finish his career here in Dallas but unless some move comes out of the blue, I just don't know what they can do to right this ship.
Personally, I'd be all over getting Chauncy Billups for anything on our roster outside Dirk and Kidd. I know he was on the block earlier this year...would be interested to see if he still is. Good scorer, very good defender, can play PG or SG, clutch shooter, has lead teams to rings.
I'd even put together a huge package of young guys, expiring contracts, and draft picks to go after him and Rashweed...roll those dice.
