Matt will probably be the only one to read this, but working up in Toronto I am bombarded with hockey talk on a regular basis...at least more than when I'm in Dallas.
I really thought after the NBA and NFL had their work stoppages, that hockey would learn its lesson from the last time they had theirs. Just get it done, QUICKLY. Avoid any kind of lockout. Keep all of your fans. Win over a few more "hey...football and basketball took away your entertainment. We won't do that again, lesson learned now come watch some hockey!".
No...instead their lockout is going to be worse than either of the other two, and at this rate they may cancel their season...seriously? What is wrong with these guys?

Well...this lockout is frustrating. It's basically the owner's needing to be saved from themselves again. They are throwing out ridiculous years and dollars on contracts and then realizing that it wasn't in their best interest to do that. This was the cause of the lockout a few years back. I just don't understand their thinking. The owners treated the players like Kobe treated that hotel employee in Colorado. Now that revenue is increasing, that means they get more, but also the players get more. Same percentage, but the owner's don't like the players getting more and more. What they are in serious danger of is losing the core fans. Fringe fans will come and go as their local teams play well and no so well. But me, a core fan, is wanting them to come back and start playing. But part of me is thinking "screw the owners" and let them see what it's like to have a league with 80% less attention than before, which was next to nothing compared to the football, basketball and baseball.
I put hockey close behind football as my favorite to watch. It is a sport that takes time to learn the quirks, but once you get them, I find there not to be a better live sport. It fails on TV if you dont know what you are watching for. I would much rather watch a Buffalo vs Calgary game than a Colorado vs Miluakee or New Orleans vs Indiana. I know its close to banishment to say that, haha.
I just want hockey back and the owners to be held accountable for their stupid decisions. What needs to happen is contraction. Take the number of teams down to about 26, that is where they were in the mid 80s to the mid 90s. That's when times were great. Rosters had players from top to bottom. With the number of teams now, the bottom 5 players shouldnt even be in the league. Talent has been watered down and that takes the level of play down. Games were up and down and offenses had room to create. No nuetral zone trap and there wasn't the clutching and grabbing. Just good ol' hockey. A typical game had anywere from 7 to 12 goals scored in it. Today's NHL is luck to have 12 goals scored in any given 5 games.
The league is far away from what it was when I first started watching in 1990 as a spry 10 year old and thats a shame...

Just watch on TV and only buy knockoff apparel. Don't give them money.

Wasn't that your bit with the Hicks era Rangers? Pretty solid idea... Just watch on TV and only buy knockoff apparel. Don't give them money.

Yep. Never paid for Rangers apparel and only went to 2 or 3 group outings until Hicks sold

I'm excited for some reason. I think I just miss it. I'm the sucker core fan that the NHL knows, that in the end, they will never lose.
I am already thinking about how awful the Stars schedule will be since it will be saddled heavily with divisional games and everyone is two hours behind us, except for the Coyotes and their crazy mountain time zone.

There is so much hockey up here in Canada that I'm hoping their attendance is TERRIBLE. Maybe everyone will just go watch the local independent teams play.

Man, that is AWESOME! I'd love to see what all goes on over there. I would love go see the independent team in Allen play, supposed to be really good. The Stars affiliate plays in Austin and are veeeeeery good. There is so much hockey up here in Canada that I'm hoping their attendance is TERRIBLE. Maybe everyone will just go watch the local independent teams play.
