The guy's career at Penn St is old enough to collect social security. He donated MILLIONS of dollars to the university. He reported what he was told to the proper UNIVERSITY authorities.
Should he have done more? Yes.
Is what he did (or didn't do) worth getting fired over? You tell me.
Will this destroy his reputation, or will he be remembered for all those other things and this ends up a footnote?

I think he should have gone straight to the cops as soon as he found out the extent of what was happening, and it really seems like the reason he didn't was to protect the school and the team. Wrong move.
He's getting overly villified, though. Sandusky is clearly the bad guy. JoePa didn't stick his shriveled wiener in those kids, but if he knew Sandusky was doing so and he still simply kept it "in house" (reporting it to the university superiors), then he definitely deserves to be fired.
And fair or not, yes, this completely destroys his reputation.

I thought the guy he reported it to was the head of campus security...shouldn't they take it to the police?
I think what he did was OK initially...but when the coverup started, he should have gone to the police.
Yes, fired is acceptable.
I don't think it will ultimately define him though. 60+ years at the university and all he has done there will eventually be his lasting mark.

He may eventually be remembered more for what he did throughout his 60+-year career, but it's going to take a long time to wash off the stink of all those soap fights and rhythmic slapping. |

I think when he is talked about it will be "he did this, he did that, he was there this long, etc" and then maybe the footnote "it's just terrible how it ended, you never expect something like that".
